Behind the Art

As a young woman, Saint Gemma Galgani endured years of intense physical pain and illness, including paralysis caused by spinal tuberculosis. Yet despite her suffering, she remained steadfast in her love for Christ, embracing her trials with extraordinary humility and trust.

I intentionally chose a dramatic contrast between light and shadow in this portrait to create a sense of intimacy, as though she is alone with the Lord in contemplation and prayer.

One of my favourite quotes of her’s is: “If you really want to love Jesus, first learn to suffer, because suffering teaches you to love.” — St. Gemma Galgani
